Customer FAQ
What is Historical Mileage Recovery?
Historical Mileage Recovery helps customers organise available records relating to past work journeys/mileage and reconstruct historical mileage where evidence supports it, including preparation of relevant claim-form information within the service.
What if I didn't keep a mileage log?
Other existing work records may still help establish historical work journeys, although this is not guaranteed in every case.
What records may help reconstruct my mileage?
Where available: historical work visit records, rotas, timesheets, work-location postcodes, mileage statements, mileage reimbursement/payment records and other relevant existing employment records.
Will MyCarerMiles contact my employer?
Where necessary and authorised, yes. This may include current or former employers.
Do I need to contact my employer myself?
Not necessarily. Where appropriate and authorised, MyCarerMiles may make the relevant request on your behalf.
What happens if I no longer work for that employer?
The service can still investigate available historical records. Where appropriate and authorised, MyCarerMiles may contact a former employer.
What if my employer cannot provide the information?
MyCarerMiles will work with the relevant evidence available and explain any important limitations.
What information may MyCarerMiles request from my employer?
Relevant existing employment records relating to work visits/journeys, work-location information, mileage records and employer mileage payments, where held.
Do you need service-user names, care notes or health information?
No. MyCarerMiles does not need unnecessary service-user information for Historical Mileage Recovery, including service-user names, full service-user addresses, telephone numbers, care notes, medication information, health information and other unrelated care information.
What if my employer already paid me mileage?
Employer mileage payments are relevant to the review, so we take any mileage reimbursement information into account when preparing your case. Depending on the circumstances, being paid mileage by an employer does not necessarily mean there is nothing further to consider.
Does every work journey qualify for tax relief?
No. Not every journey connected with work necessarily qualifies. The treatment depends on the type of journey and the applicable tax rules, so the available journey information needs to be reviewed as part of the process.
Does using MyCarerMiles guarantee HMRC will accept reconstructed mileage?
No. MyCarerMiles does not guarantee HMRC acceptance.
Am I guaranteed a tax refund?
No. Historical Mileage Recovery does not guarantee tax relief or a cash refund.
What happens once my mileage evidence has been prepared?
MyCarerMiles prepares the relevant P87 form/information. You review and sign it, return it to MyCarerMiles, and MyCarerMiles posts the completed form.
How long does Historical Mileage Recovery take?
Timescales vary depending on available evidence, whether information needs to be requested from third parties and external response times. No fixed completion time is published.
How much does Historical Mileage Recovery cost?
The current fixed fee is £29.99.
What happens if sufficient evidence cannot be obtained?
MyCarerMiles will make clear what evidence was available, what information was obtained or attempted, and any material limitations.
